Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve

San Diego dog friendly hike easy enough for all ages filled with tons of natural beauty and perfect for trail running or mountain biking.

Winter in San Diego, you never know what you’re going to get. Didn’t Forrest Gump say something like that? Or was it about chocolates? I don’t remember, I wasn’t born when that movie came out. Anyway, I had so much fun on my last hike with Crossfit ATR people I was stoked to get to join them again.

This time we took up Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve. I heard good things about this hike and that there was a waterfall at the end of it. When we got there the parking lot was flooded, but the trail’s were actually pretty dry. I only got my paws muddy in a few sections that the sun never got to. We walked for a pretty long time, but then we saw signs for a waterfall. You could hear the rushing water from a long ways away. It was really showing off today. The rain from the day before helped get it going.

We hung out for a little bit and then I climbed to the top of a rock with my dad to look around for miles. On the way back we got to cross a bridge that was in a jungle area. I wanted to jump in the pond but my parents kept telling me not to. They’re no fun sometimes.

When I heard there was a waterfall, I pictured something else, but I guess not every hike can be like a Hawaiian hike. At least I got to explore! Overall - If you’re an older pup or have little humans with you, this is a great hike for you. 8 miles round trip of paved trail makes it easy for everyone!
